 The next week passed quickly, but the trip to London was always in the back of Merlin's mind.  He would be meeting Arthur's father for the first time in this millennium, but Merlin suspected the king would dislike him as much now as he had back in Camelot.  Especially if he suspected that Merlin and Arthur were anything more than friends.  However, worries aside, Merlin had packed (and re-packed to add a few certain things in a small bag buried in the bottom of his suitcase) making sure he had anything he might possibly need for the weekend. 

The morning of their departure, Merlin had fretted and paced as he waited for Arthur's text to alert him that the car was there to pick him up on the road.  He checked the magical wards that protected his cottage as he left, walking quickly to the main road and climbing into the back after the driver had stowed his bag.

"I wonder why that is." Smirking, Arthur sits up, holding out a hand for Merlin to follow him into the ensuit bathroom.

"No, I doubt they would." Arthur steps into the large shower and turns on the water.

Merlin waits until he can see the steam off the water before he follows Arthur into the shower and wraps his arms around his lover from behind. "This shower is big enough for four people, if we were into that..." Merlin marvels at the size compared to his tiny shower at home that they share frequently.

"One of the perks of being the future King." Arthur leans back against Merlin, reaching for the shower gel.

"There seem to be quite a few of those," Merlin chuckles quietly and proceeds to 'help' Arthur was, though in actuality he's just using the excuse to grope and fondle his lover. After that last round he doubts either of them could get it up, even if they tried.

"There are." He grins and happily lets Merlin take over with his personal hygiene and then returns the favour once Merlin is done. "You don't seem to be nervous at the prospect of having dinner with the King."

Merlin shrugs, leaning against the wall of shower as Arthur cleans him. "It doesn't seem so scary now that we've been having sex in Buckingham Palace all afternoon."

"That's a story to tell your grandkids." Arthur laughs, finishing washing Merlin's hair. "On second thought, mabye not."

Merlin laughs too and reaches for Arthur, pulling him into a kiss. "Perhaps that story is best left for stag parties and entertaining anecdotes."

"Probably." Arthur kisses him back before walking out of the shower, handing a towel to Merlin.

Merlin follows Arthur's lead, toweling off and making himself presentable for his boyfriend's father, who just so happens to be the King of England. He wasn't nervous about it, but not was he looking forward to a few hours in Uther's company at dinner.

Arthur goes back into his room and puts on a fresh set of clothes, checking his apperance in the mirror. Just like Merlin, he isn't exactly looking forward to this.

Merlin dresses in the same clothes he'd arrived in, since they were still basically clean and his other clothes were across the hallway.

"Ready for this?" Merlin asks, smiling softly as he runs his fingers through Arthur's damp hair.

"As ready as I'll ever be for dinner with my father." Arthur pulls a face. "I apologise in advance for him."

Merlin leans against the vanity and draws Arthur to him for a soft kiss. "I love you. Your father won't change that."

"He won't." Merlin kisses him once more as someone knocks on the door announcing they are needed in the dining room in ten minutes. "I suppose we should head down... It will take us ten minutes to get there."

Arthur chuckles, drawing back from Merlin reluctantly. "Yeah, everything is a bit of a walk in here." He adjusts his collar one last time before walking past Merlin and towards the door. "I hope this won't take too long."

They make their way through the various hallways in Buckingham Palace until they reach one of the dining rooms where the King is already waiting. They sit down opposite to Uther awkwardly.

does one of us want to handle uther and the other one can handle morgana and the bad guys?

Merlin does his best to remember all of the rules of etiquette, but truthfully it's much more difficult sitting at the table with Uther and Arthur rather than standing behind Arthur and attending solely to his prince during dinner. It makes for a very awkward and uncomfortable meal, as Uther himself struggles for small talk with the two younger men.

They have just finished the first course when there is a sudden uproar outside in the hallway. Before anybody gets a chance to get up and see what's going on, two armed guards burst inside, looking alarmed. "Your majesty! There has been an attack, you have to come with us immediately." Uther gives Arthur a stern look as he gets up. "What the hell is going on?" Arthur looks seriously worried and waits for Merlin to follow them of the room. There have been various threats over the last years but nobody has ever managed to get inside the palace.
